Amphora Series

Visiting Pompeii and the Naples National Archaeological Museum in 2023, Laura was struck by the incredible skill and ambition of the ancient potters. The ceramics of Pompeii, both beautiful are incredibly preserved. The discovering of Pompeii and similar sites led to a revival of interest in antiquity across Europe and a revival of the classical style in the 18th century.

Still inspiring today, the elegant forms and dramatic handles are precisely made, but still show traces of the crafts people’s touch. Stripping away the decoration and reimagining the forms in a contemporary style Laura strives to be part of the tradition of beautifully designed and crafted ceramics of the Greek and Etruscan artisans.

Thrown in porcelain, each piece is carefully turned to reveal the precise shape, the crisp edges, adding a sense of drama. The Amphora series consists of three pieces for sale as individual sculptures:

‘Amphora’, thrown in white porcelain with extruded handles and poured midnight blue glaze and displayed on a thrown black porcelain pedestal (2023). H 45.5cm x W 18.5cm x D 17cm

‘Calyx Krater’, thrown in teal coloured porcelain with extruded handles and displayed on a thrown black porcelain pedestal (2024). H 33.5cm x W 23cm x D 19.5cm
